Saturday, September 20th Mosaic Templars Cultural Center Public Opening 501 West Ninth Street, Little Rock About Mosaic Templars Cultural Center It has been almost 100 years since the Mosaic Templars of America dedicated its National Grand Temple (headquarters) at the corner of Ninth and Broadway in historic downtown Little Rock. On September 20th, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will open its doors to the public in the footprint of the original headquarters building as Arkansas’s first state-funded museum dedicated to African-American heritage. The effort to open a museum solely devoted to the state’s African-American culture began in 2003 as a renovation of the original Mosaic Templars headquarters building. But, after a fire destroyed the original building in 2005, a complete reconstruction was necessary. The fourth museum of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, the center received $8.3 million from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council to rebuild on the original Mosaic Templars site as a cultural center and museum. As the grand-opening date nears, the center’s staff is busily working to install exhibits, finalize educational materials and organize an ever-growing collection of artifacts. The center focuses on all aspects of African-American life in Arkansas, with emphasis on achievements in business, politics and the arts. The center will also preserve the history of the Mosaic Templars, the influential black fraternal organization founded in Little Rock in 1883 by John E. Bush and Chester W. Keatts to provide burial and life insurance to the black community. At its zenith in the 1920s, Mosaic Templars membership numbered in the tens of thousands, with chapters in 26 states and seven countries. Before its decline in the 1930s, the organization grew to include an insurance company, a building and loan association, a publishing company, a business college, a nursing school and a hospital.
